The Darkside of Hyde Park in Sydney is a restaurant with a difference – you eat in complete darkness! You read the menu and place your orders in a lit area. Then, you are led into the dining area, with hands on the shoulders of the diner before you. The dining area is in complete darkness and all lightmaking devices – “flashlights, matches, mobiles, cigarette lighters and luminous watches” – are banned. You are served by waiters in night-vision goggles, their red dots being the only visual element in the whole setting. The idea behind the setting is to eliminate one sense totally so that the other senses – taste, smell amd touch – are fully enhanced. A forerunner to the Darkside was the Swiss Blindekuh, or Blind Cow.
